But again this past week we saw God's amazing opening in enabling us to purchase two hectares of land from the Pakuranga Country Club on the Botany/Cascades Road corner. It was strategic for us as we need land for sports fields if we are to build the college roll to the numbers we want. Three property developers were also after it but the bank came in with a proposal to support our tender. In a week we went from being the least favoured tender to the favoured one. It is beautiful piece of land and well placed between the two school campuses. The college is also working with the club to establish a Golf Acadamy in the school. From our initial four acres we now have over seventeen acres in the east that will bless generations.

The mortgages over the college are paid for by the Attendance Dues parents pay and other funds we receive for property. No money from the church goes into the school land or facilities apart from the land we initally purchased at 159 Botany Road that the church is on. The church benefits from the school buildings as our Integration Agreement says that the church can use the buildings outside school hours. So buildings such as the gym were paid for by the school but used by our church children's programmes and other groups. It's a great arrangement as the school use the church auditorium for assembly and other larger gatherings. When I see so many church facilities empty most of the week, I think it is being a good steward of God's resources as our buildings are used many times over each week.

It was sad Monday last week to attend the funeral of Sonya Kelly. Sonya was a great wife and mum and sadly lost a twelve year battle with cancer. Some things are hard to understand with our natural minds.

On Sunday Marilyn and I were up in Whangarei at our North Campus. We have seen the congregation grow almost by 50% since Steve and Bex went up there. The congregation love them. The rebranding is almost complete with a bright fun sign for our Daycare going up, clearly identifying it as Christian.

The big 65 and the PM

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/05/the-big-65-and-the-pm.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/05/the-big-65-and-the-pm.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

Last Friday was my big 65 birthday. It was a huge day with the opening also of our new Junior Campus which was attended by the Prime Minister John Key and Mayor of Auckland Len Brown. I like to think it was part of my birthday celebrations and they came for my birthday. Its been a few full days; last Thursday we had dinner with family, Friday the opening of the campus and then dinner with our Associate Pastors, Saturday I took the wedding of Elaine and Phillip (Elaine is the daughter of old friends Tony and Nettie Morrison) and then Sunday the church gave a bit of a birthday surprise during the services. Today we are catching up with friends John and Ngaire Booth, then Tony and Nettie and after that I am off to an overnight retreat with many of the Elim Pastors from around the country. Plenty happening.

We had great services over the weekend. I really enjoyed hearing our young leaders preaching on Sunday nights. Our strength has been our developing of leaders and we have many coming through.

<div class="wsite-image Clinton and Jan built our Dunedin church up from a handful of folk to a dynamic church with great facilities; then pioneered our church in the heart of Christchurch City, which in turn has developed into one of our largest churches. Clinton was also our longest serving member on the National Leadership Team, so our journeys have been closely interwoven. The last few years have taken their toll and Clinton says he is burnt out, needs a break, and would like to do something new for the remainder of his working life. Marilyn and I are going to greatly miss them as they have been so much part of our ministry life and have been great encouragers. Although we may not be serving in the church together, we can still keep our valued friendship.

We have the official opening of our new Junior College this week with the Prime Minister John Key as our special guest. We have been so fortunate that his government has been very supportive of ourselves and integrated schools. It is an honour and prprivilege or us that he is willing to attend this event.

the week that was

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/the-week-that-was.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/the-week-that-was.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

I was in the South on Sunday; it is great to see work finally started on the Daycare upgrade and expansion

I approach sixty five next month so I made my way along to Work and Income to register for the Super. How time flies.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when we started the church in Howick Intermediate School hall. A number that came on that first Sunday are still with us today. One of those couples is Thelma and Roger Nicholls. Roger also led our missions for many years, even heading up to Ethiopia for three months to build a church.

Roger is very sick at the moment and the prognosis is not good. I called up to Middlemore Hospital to see him on Friday, he is in good spirits but very weak. So often we undervalue our ideas and don’t see them as God inspired. Comments can come back like “That’s just man’s ideas and man’s way of doing things,” and the result is we allow ourselves to be intimidated. This kind of talk by supposedly spiritual people is just nonsense.

I’ve long since learn that when Jesus said we will know what is right by the fruit it produces; that this is a good test. I have also found that those who have the courage to follow their ideas produce a fruit that remains; they build great churches, businesses and organisations. God takes ideas and makes them great. When you successfully follow an idea it is also God’s way of helping other people.

As a local church in the east we have now well over 100 employed in our various ministries; we have been able to provide about a quarter of the national Elim budget, rebuild the city, south and north congregations with personal and finances, and to finance mission’s projects overseas. Even the local community and local businesses are blessed. Hundreds of youth and children are taught Christian values each week.

Others through employment and opportunities are able to follow their dreams. Generations find faith and are blessed in so many different ways. Take your ideas and make them great.

Easter

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/easter.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/easter.html#comments

Uncategorized

Amazing Easter services across our congregations. Huge numbers came out to celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour. I was speaking at the East on the Friday morning service. Over 1000 were present and it was an awesome service concluding with families and friends gathering in groups to take communion together. I'm thinking we may need to add a dawn service next year in the East and South to cope with the numbers wanting to attend.

Sunday was the same, with South with its largest Sunday attendance filling both services, North it's second largest, the East was huge in all three services and I spoke in the City which was also well attended. Marilyn and I caught the first half of the first service and the last half of the third in the East. Caleb's preaching was outstanding and Richard did a great job of putting the service and stage together.

Mike and Liz have headed off to the UK to attend the UK Elim Conference. Mike will also be speaking at Kensington Temple in London Christian Life Centre Birmingham.

Marilyn and I are just taking a couple of days away at our Bach in Mangakino with our daughter in law Virginia and grandson Hunter. Hopefully the beautiful Easter weather will continue another few days.

Sri Lanka/India Trip

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/sri-lankaindia-trip.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/04/sri-lankaindia-trip.html#comments

Uncategorized

  [...]

We arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday March 13 and spent the first night in Colombo. Thanks to the generosity of some of our folk we enjoyed really nice accommodation in Sri Lanka. They were worried Marilyn would be roughing it. India was back to reality though. The visit to Sri Lanka was to view the land that we were looking at purchasing in Colombo to build a training centre, but I didn't feel right about the land or the way it was to proceed, so we will look at other options. I really would like to see us focus more on the north of the country which has suffered greatly with the war.

During our time in Sri Lanka Pastor Suresh from Colombo accompanied us and we preached in his churches on the Sunday. The first couple of days we went to see some of the tourist sites. We visited the Mountain of Life (Jeevanakanda) Girls Home. This is a great work established by a South African couple, that takes in girls that have been sexually abused. The courts send girls to them. Amazing testimonies, very impressed and worth any support we can give them. Pieter and Louie Ter Haar have been doing this work for over 20 years but still have to fight each year with immigration to stay.

Our first stop in India was the TVGM children's home in Trichy led by Bro. Christopher. We have invested in the Home and in a van here, in what is a very good work. I was impressed with Christopher's son Stephen who has been educated in the States. (In all the areas we are working there are bright young leaders coming forward.) Christopher has a big vision and is worthy of any support we can give.

We then visited GEMS Ministry in the north of India at Bihar. This is an incredible ministry founded by Augustine Jebakumar. Before he came to Bihar it was called the graveyard of missionaries, but there had been two Elim lady missionaries who had been there for about 30 years and saw no fruit from their ministry; not one person saved. But they prayed that God would send someone. Augustine reluctantly responded to a vision from God. The ministry today would be among the largest Christian work in India with evangelism, church planting, discipleship training, education, hospital services and many other social services touching many thousands. What we saw was amazing but it only represents about 5% of their total work. The story reads like the book of Acts. I really liked Augustine; his passion and vision was inspiring. His son Eddie is to attend MTC this year.

Back in Chennai we spent a day training the Elim Pastors on the Friday. Last year we brought Pastor Sam's son Joseph over to our conference and the fruit of that was obvious. He has really risen in leadership. It was a good day and we had a very good question and answer time in the afternoon. I have invited Joseph to come to conference again this year and to bring his wife. On the Sunday we preached in different services and locations. We only met with Pastor Sam one evening and then he was off to take a team to Israel.

We also caught up with Dr. V G Selvaraj. Selvaraj is an extremely wealthy businessman who also preaches and plants churches. We got to be chauffered around Chennai in the latest Jaguar for an afternoon. Having Marilyn with us brought some perks.

It was good to have Boyd along; he is a key to future relationships in Sri Lanka and India with these new young leaders coming through. Viki is outstanding in this environment. His planning is immaculate and he has broad acceptance across a wide range of Christian leaders.

Outstanding Leaders and an Upcoming Trip

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/03/outstanding-leaders-and-an-upcoming-trip.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/03/outstanding-leaders-and-an-upcoming-trip.html#comments

Uncategorized

I have been fortunate to attend two seminars over the past two days led by two great Christian leaders. On Monday night Marilyn and I heard Dr. Ben Carson speak at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre. Dr. Carson is a world renowned Neurosurgeon who wrote the book “Gifted Hands.” He is famous for his ground-breaking work separating conjoined twins. He was outstanding at this meeting and I hear also on TV and talk-back radio.

Then on Tuesday morning our Pastoral staff went to hear Pastor Bill Hybels from Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago. Bill is a world leader in Christian circles especially on subjects like leadership. His Global Summit conference is repeated around the world is attended by over 120,000 leaders in over sixty countries. He is one of my favorite speakers so it is a real treat to hear him live in NZ.

Next Tuesday Marilyn, Boyd, Viki and I are off to Sri Lanka and India. We are in the process of purchasing land in Sri Lanka for a training centre and we also want to strengthen our ties in India where we have a strong church. Please keep us in your prayers. Hopefully I may get a chance to send an update to you from there.

The weekend past

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/02/the-weekend-past.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/02/the-weekend-past.html#comments

Uncategorized

On Saturday night we held our Proprietors evening for new parents in the college. With the new Junior Campus it was a larger number than we usually have. Our strength as a school is the strong connection with the church (Proprietor); we are a church based integrated school. In fact we are the largest Protestant church integrated school in New Zealand. This connection with the school and church will ensure that as the years pass the college will not lose its strong Christian foundation. Sadly many great learning institutions around the world were started by Christians but over time have lost their evangelical passion. It was a great evening.

On Sunday morning Marilyn and I were in our City congregation. The secret of the campus church model is having the lead Pastor in each congregation carrying the same DNA as the main congregation. We have struggled with this in the city, but Tim and Karen Symons have picked it up and are doing a fantastic job. The church was a buzz, a large crowd and lots of visitors, I loved the worship, it felt great. It was good to welcome Bob and Margaret Lawson into the team and great to have Victor Gee and family also back with us. Victor carries a strong preaching and music gifting which will be an awesome blessing to the church.

This Sunday we are back in the East kicking off our new series “When Love Speaks” in which we will be looking at some of the amazing words of love Jesus spoke on the Cross.

Nelson and BHAGS

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/02/nelson-and-bhags.html

http://www.elimchristiancentre.org.nz/2/post/2012/02/nelson-and-bhags.html#comments

Uncategorized

Marilyn and I headed down to Nelson on Saturday to catch up with Richard and Maria Batchelar, speak in their services and dedicate their new baby Eva to the Lord. (Big hairy audacious goals). We have had to expand on some of them since we set them a couple of years ago as we had grown past them in some areas. We also received word that the Prime Minister will come an open our new school in April. Some of us slipped back around to the church after the meeting to catch the end of the youth service. The place was packed and buzzing with over 400 young people from across our four congregations.

We are holding discussions with the Pakuranga Golf Club at the moment on purchasing some land off them for sports fields for the college. The timing is not great with all the other developments but hopefully we can work out something that would be of mutual benefit. It would give us another 1.5ha which is just a bit bigger than our 159 Botany site. This would give us around 17 acres of land in Howick which would be amazing. Keep us in your prayers.
